A Study on Ageism, Hopelessness and Suicidal Ideation on Elderly

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore discrimination, hopelessness and suicidal ideation and to identify related factors in elderly.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was used to study 178 elderly, recruited from welfare center in Gyeonggi-do. The data was collected survey interview between 1 December and 20 December in 2014. Demographic factors, The Ageism Survey, Beck¡¯s the hopelessness scale (BHPL), Suicide ideation Scale were investigated.

Results: The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) Significant factors of suicidal ideation by Subject Characteristics were gender (t=2.56, p=.013), educational level (F=5.26, p=.006), perceived economic level(F=-3.18,
p=.002), chronic disease (t=-1.99, p=.049), family type(t=4.12, p=.018). 2) A statistically significant relationship between hopelessness (r=.42, p<.001), ageism (r=.46, p<.001)and suicidal ideation. 3) The results of the regression analyses showed that ageism, hopelessness, gender and family type were statistically significant in predicting patients¡¯ suicidal ideation.

Conclusion: The result of this review provide a better understanding of ageism, hopelessness and suicidal ideation in elderly. Suicidal prevention program for elderly should be focused on results of the study.
